China's Former FDA Chief: 'Don't Kill Me'

guillotine.jpgZheng Xiaoyu, who was sentenced to death on corruption charges last month, has appealed for leniency in a second hearing of his case. The former director of China's State Food and Drug Administration says his sentence as the "penalty was too severe," and should be reconsidered because he "confessed his crimes" and "cooperated with the investigating prosecutors."

Zheng, 63, received the death penalty for taking $850,000 in bribes on the graft charge and seven years in prison for dereliction of duty. All his personal property was confiscated and he was deprived of his political rights for life. Some countries are tougher than others when it comes to industry influence.

Six types of medicine approved by the state FDA during his tenure were fake and some drugmakers used false documents to apply for approvals. At least 10 people died as a result of the use of improperly tested drugs, China's state media reported.

China executes its corrupt FDA officials. We just hound our good ones out of a job. Our cultural differences are so fascinating, don't you think?

I am glad to see that tough punishment is taken on these individuals that have a hand in taking others lives. Perhaps this will allow people to think twice before they start taking money.

Good for China. I have no sympathy for this guy. In fact, his demise will go a long way towards renewing what little confidence I had in Chinese products.
