Klick Health has seen a lot of growth and innovation in its 16-year history. But according to agency leadership, none shine as bright as the collective accomplishments and milestones that have brought the flourishing maverick independent agency to its current spot in the industry.
“We’ve had the year of our lives,” says Leerom Segal, co-founder and CEO of Klick. “Our data-driven, people-centric strategic approach to running our business paid off in dividends. It’s what distinguishes us from other agencies and it’s what drives our success.”
Over the course of the year, Klick Health grew by more than 37 percent, with revenue reaching over $100 million. The year’s growth was fueled by 11 new digital agency of record accounts, five new branded agency of record accounts that are not exclusively digital, and three new global accounts. Internally, Klick also experienced substantial growing, increasing its employee roster by 101 new hires – bringing the total number of staff to 350 ‘Klicksters’. The agency also opened a new San Francisco-based office, bringing the company within a stone’s throw of West Coast biotechnology clients.
Among its innovative offerings introduced in 2013, Klick launched its Katalyst Digital Strategy, Digital Clinical Trial Recruiting, and Managed Markets Access. The Katalyst campaign showcases how Klick helps clients develop a robust digital strategy to drive their business with a captivating, 193-page hardcover book, complete with a state-of-the-art Welcome Video inside the front cover.
“Far from your average communication tool, Katalyst received far from average results,” executives say. According to agency leaders, the 2,357 copies Klick published and distributed helped generate hundreds of calls, dozens of meetings, and several million dollars in new business.
Likewise, Klick’swork in digital clinical trial recruiting campaigns have experienced great initial success with clinical trials experiencing more than 130 percent lift in registrations.
Klick executives say the agency’s innovative spirit was also highlighted by the 85 awards it won in 2013, most notably the Manny Vision Award, the MM&M Agency of the Year Award, and the PharmaVoice 100 Award for CEO Leerom Segal, who was chosen for the second year in a row. Klick’s management was also recognized with awards for Best Managed Companies, Best Workplaces for Woman, and Top 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures, among others.
Additionally solidifying his role as a key thought leader, Segal, along with Klick co-authors Aaron Goldstein, Jay Goldman, and RahafHarfoush, penned “The Decoded Company,” the first book on big data in the work place. The book features eye-opening case studies of progressive companies such as Google, Starbucks, Whole Foods, UPS, and Klick Health. Subject to a publishers’ bidding war, a book deal was ultimately signed with Penguin for publication during February 2014.
Executives say Klick’s culture is at the heart of the company, as evidenced by the Bring-Your-Pet-To-Work-Day video it filmed and released for the holidays in November 2013. The video, at www.klick.com/holiday, features Klick employees and more than 30 animals and exotic. The video received more than 26,000 hits and coverage from multiple media, including Yahoo! Finance, National Post, and Marketing Magazine.
To further perpetuate a positive, engaging work culture and recognize employee contributions and achievements, Klick encourages employees to post ‘Kudos’ on the company’s internal social media platform. In 2013, a total of 4,308 Kudos were posted in the popular peer-recognition program.
Klick also provides employees with unique opportunities that foster positive leadership skills. During 2013, staff were sent on Leadership Pipeline Development trips to more than 27 locations, including Tibet, Kenya, and Hawaii.
Culture additionally extended into Klick’s hiring practices when the company, known for its fully stocked ice cream freezer, distributed 785 ice cream bars in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia during September 2013 to give other agency staffers “a taste” of Klick.
“We were thrilled by the response our guerilla hiring campaign got,” Segal says. “It introduced Klick to a lot of people and made them smile. We received hundreds of business cards and hired a VP-level executive as a result.”
2013 marked Klick’s 16th year of being independent. Since day one, the company has been led by co-founder and CEO Leerom Segal. His leadership has spurred Klick’s growth rate of more than 30 percent year-on-year since the company’s inception. Klick is also led by a 10-person senior executive team, which collectively has 211 years of industry experience.
Throughout the years, Klick’s portfolio of services has grown, transforming the company into a full-service digital marketing agency offering a full spectrum of services. Says Segal, “If it’s digital, we do it, and if it’s not digital, we do it, too.”
According to agency leaders, Klick is preparing for even greater growth in the year ahead with 100 percent focus on biopharma and medical devices. With 50 percent projected growth for 2014, based solely on existing relationships, the company is hiring aggressively in order to scale predictably and with confidence to meet this growing need. It is adding an additional floor to its Toronto headquarters, growing its office footprint to four floors. This additional floor will feature a new squash court and expanded fitness facilities.
In 2013, Klick donated more than $150,000 to various charitable organizations, of which $88,620 was donated through its Klick It Forward Program, which enables employees who come in under budget on a program to donate the difference to a charity of their choosing – conferring a personal touch to corporate philanthropy. In 2013 alone, employees used their Klick It Forward dollars to buy a total of 265 malaria nets in Africa, fund 386 microfinance loans through Kiva, and donate almost 1,300 goats, pigs and chickens.
To bring its corporate philanthropy program full circle, Klick sent five employee ambassadors to Rwanda to track the impact of their donations. The ambassadors met local villagers and visited schools in 12 communities, distributing supplies and sharing in the generosity of their host communities during their 10-day trip.
According to Segal, it all comes down to helping people, especially patients. “Our clients are in the business of saving lives and we consider ourselves fortunate to be part of the process.”
