The Med Ad News team today revealed the finalists for the 2016 Manny Awards, to be held April 21 at Pier Sixty of Chelsea Piers in New York City. This year’s awards show represents the 27th edition of showcasing the healthcare communications industry’s premier creative work and talent.
About 100 healthcare agencies and networks are anticipated to partake in this year’s process. To be eligible for the Manny Awards, agencies are asked to submit a collection of materials that are published in Med Ad News‘ April magazine. The annual compilation includes a write-up of each participating healthcare communications agency and network including their year in review, future plans, key stats, client accounts listing, and more.
The Industry Person of the Year for 2016 is Ed Mitzen of Fingerpaint. Ed founded the full-service marketing agency Fingerpaint, based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 2008. Since then, the business has grown to 135 employees with annual revenue exceeding $20 million. “This past year was truly incredible,” he says. “We exceeded our own expectations in terms of strategic advances made, and we are very excited about our future.” In recent months, Fingerpaint has added two strong industry presences to the team, Bill McEllen and Bruce Rooke.
As always the case, the Med Ad News team had a tough task in choosing three Agency of the Year finalists for each of the three revenue categories due to extremely strong performances from many different entities. For Category I, which features agencies that generated more than $50 million in 2015 income, this year’s nominees are AbelsonTaylor, Area 23, and Intouch Solutions. Each of these agencies has been declared an Agency of the Year winner at least once in past years. AbelsonTaylor of Chicago is a long-standing Manny participant, having been recognized multiple times by its peers as the industry’s Most Admired Agency and it also has captured the Most Creative Agency award a record 11 times. After winning five out of seven Manny Award nominations in 2015 including Agency of the Year Category II, New York-based Area 23 is up for an agency-leading nine different award categories in 2016. The independent shop Intouch Solutions with headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas, has emerged as a multichannel powerhouse, with revenue in 2015 exceeding $100 million for the first time in the agency’s history. Intouch was also a finalist for Agency of the Year Category I in 2015.
The 2016 finalists for Agency of the Year Category II (with yearly revenue between $25 million to $50 million) are Concentric Health Experience, Juice Pharma Worldwide, and RevHealth. New York-based Concentric captured Agency of the Year Category III honors in 2015, and strong growth has pushed the New York-based entity into a higher revenue tier for the 2016 Manny Awards. Concentric is also a contender for this year’s Heart Award (for Concentric Health Intelligence) and Best Launch Campaign (for Rexulti). This marks the second consecutive Agency of the Year finalist nomination for Juice Pharma Worldwide. The New York-based agency experienced major expansion of its client roster and agency offerings during 2015, and a groundbreaking TV commercial for the antifungal Jublia was prepared by Juice and aired during the 2016 Super Bowl. Morristown, N.J.-based RevHealth experienced another year of continued double-digit revenue growth during 2015, vaulting it into Category II territory for the first time ever, while adding nine new clients last year.
In the Agency of the Year Category III competition for advertising firms generating less than $25 million in annual revenue, this year’s three finalists are Centron, HCB Health, and McCann Managed Markets. Centron of New York was additionally a finalist in this award category in 2015, which marked the agency’s 10-year anniversary. During last year, Centron concentrated resources on several significant product launches, landed various new business wins, and realigned its operational structure. HCB’s stellar showing in 2015 included 10 new account wins and the acquisition of a long-time participant in Med Ad News‘ April agency review, Chicago-based Topin and Associates. The Austin, Texas-based agency has also been nominated for the Heart Award along with AbelsonTaylor and Juice Pharma for their partnering with MIT Hacking Medicine to host a three-day “HackMed Health House” workshop during the 23rd Annual SXSW Interactive Festival earlier this month. After producing a breakout year in 2014 with overall growth of 15 percent, McCann Managed Markets followed up that result with an agency-record 37 percent growth in 2015. Recently relocated to Mountain Lakes, N.J., McCann Managed Markets is additionally a finalist for a first-time Manny Award category in 2016, Best Managed Markets Campaign.

More than 600 industry peers are expected to join Med Ad News in honoring winners across 20 total award categories, including the year’s Most Creative Agency, Most Admired Agency, Best Launch Campaign, Agency of the Year I, II and III, and more. The Manny Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
The Manny Awards also continues its tradition of honoring the agency community for their exceptional forward thinking and philanthropic efforts. The Vision Award recognizes exceptional ideas and initiatives that have the power to transform the way that healthcare communications agencies do business. The Heart Award was created by the Med Ad News editorial staff to recognize agencies’ social responsibility and commitment to philanthropic and social causes. All three finalists selected will receive a cash donation to their respective causes.
Med Ad News introduced an additional level of review voting process in 2016, rolling out the MedAdvocate panel of jurors. The first round of voting took place online, via the Manny Awards voting site, and included selections from over 100 eligible voters across healthcare communication agencies. In order to take a deeper dive into the finalist campaigns, a panel of experts dubbed “MedAdvocates” were each assigned specific campaigns and tasked to initiate meaningful dialog amongst the jurors. MedAdvocates were selected based on their creative expertise and widely recognized performance within the industry. Ultimately, the team scored each finalist campaign using a point system that, combined with the popular vote conducted online, arrived at the eventual winners to be crowned on April 21, 2016.
Med Ad News is pleased to also recognize Ed Mitzen, Founder of Fingerpaint. Ed has successfully launched three different healthcare marketing companies totaling over $300 million in combined revenue. His current company, Fingerpaint, is a full-service marketing agency with 135 employees, three locations and nearly $30 million in annual revenue. Breaking from the typical ad agency paradigm, Ed launched this employee-owned company with the mantra, “no titles, no offices, no egos.” The collaborative work culture has generated award-winning creative and explosive growth.
