The one-time cost to insert a Greenfield IVC filter for patients at risk of venous thromboembolism is about $37,000. Probably less than what semuloparin would have cost long term if it were approved. Plus there is no risk of bleeding. IVC filters are safely placed under imaging and have long term success in preventing pulmonary embolism. Given this particular patient population, they will easily outlast the patient.
