Unfortunately the Reuters headline writer put a misleading headline to the smoking piece. The Forest drug is actually indicated for COPD, which may include coughing as a symptom. The coughing with COPD is a heavy productive cough which the person has trouble bringing up because of bronchoconstriction, and the new drug will halp the bronchial smooth muscle to relax and facilitate expectoration.

On the other hand "smoker's cough" is a hacking non-productive cough that many smokers get way before COPD, and is due to the fact that nicotime dries out the mucuous membranses in the throat.
