Pfizer said on April 22 the company was voluntarily recalling five batches of Accupril blood pressure tablets after finding elevated levels of a potential cancer-causing agent in the medicine.

A federal judge on February 16 dismissed a proposed class action lawsuit by consumers who accused Pfizer Inc. of failing to disclose the presence of cancer-causing agents in Chantix before recalling the anti-smoking drug.

Pfizer Inc. said on Aug. 13 the company is recalling four additional lots of the anti-smoking treatment Chantix after finding elevated levels of cancer-causing agents called nitrosamines in the pills.

Pfizer issued a voluntary recall for 12 lots of the company’s anti-smoking drug Chantix (varenicline) due to the presence of a nitrosamine impurity exceeding the company’s established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) level. As a result, Pfizer is pausing distribution of Chantix and is accelerating the company’s internal testing of the product.

The U.S. drug regulator said on July 16 the FDA will temporarily allow manufacturers to distribute the anti-smoking drug varenicline with elevated levels of an impurity that may cause cancer, to maintain availability after Pfizer Inc. halted distribution of the company’s Chantix branded varenicline.

The Trump administration is temporarily allowing some impurities in alcohol-based hand sanitizer to ensure access to the product during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mylan has come under fire from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over inadequate good manufacturing practices at one of the company’s drug manufacturing facilities in India.

GlaxoSmithKline Plc is recalling the company’s heartburn medicine Zantac as a “precautionary measure” due to a probable cancer-causing impurity in the drug, Britain’s medicines watchdog said.

The FDA found “unacceptable levels” of a cancer-causing impurity in limited testing using low-heat method of samples of heartburn medicines such as Zantac containing the ingredient ranitidine.

Novartis AG’s Sandoz unit is halting distribution of the company’s versions of the product commonly known as Zantac in all of the Swiss drugmaker’s markets, including the United States and Canada, after contaminants were found in the heartburn drug.
