Data on COVID-19 during pregnancy: Severity of maternal illness

Pregnant women are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19, according to a study from MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report). The study shows that pregnant women are more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), receive invasive ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and are at increased risk of death compared to nonpregnant women.

The MMWR Series is prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is working with state, local and territorial health departments as well as external partners to learn more about COVID-19 during pregnancy. Health departments that are notified of COVID-19 cases in pregnant women may gather more information using an optional module in addition to a case report form. CDC will use this info to update clinical guidance for pregnant women and their infants.
