Snuffing out tumors at their genetic roots — rather than chasing a cancer from organ to organ — has long been a goal of researchers and doctors. The American Society for Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute, for example, have launched studies that spot gene mutations then attack with highly targeted drugs.
