Genentech Throws Cancers in a Basket to Detect Tumors at Their Genetic Roots

A groundbreaking cancer study funded by Genentech Inc. found that siccing a drug on a specific genetic mutation — rather than at specific types of cancer — could work for some patients but not for others.

Snuffing out tumors at their genetic roots — rather than chasing a cancer from organ to organ — has long been a goal of researchers and doctors. The American Society for Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute, for example, have launched studies that spot gene mutations then attack with highly targeted drugs.
