Health Outcomes: Facts & Figures

Patients who were hospitalized for either COVID-19 or heart failure were more likely to have shorter hospital stays if they had an active patient portal account, according to a recent Epic Research study. Patients between 18 and 55 years old with COVID-19 averaged a full day less in the hospital – 5.4 days versus 6.4 days – if they used a patient portal, while patients ages 55-64 averaged 7.1 days versus 8.1 days, 65-74 averaged 7.3 days versus 8.4 days, and 75-84 averaged 7.3 days versus 8.2 days. Patients ages 18 through 55 with heart failure averaged 4.5 days in the hospital if they had an active patient portal account and 4.8 days if not, while patients ages 55-64 averaged 4.6 days versus 5.0 days, 65-74 averaged 4.5 days versus 5.1 days, and 75-84 averaged 4.5 days versus 5.0 days. According to the same study, 43.3 percent of patients ages 18-55 admitted for COVID-19 had active patient portal accounts, while 36.9 percent of patients 55-64, 34.9 percent of patients 65-74, and 29.2 percent of patients 75-84 had them. Additionally, 32.2 percent of patients ages 18-55 admitted for heart failure had active patient portal accounts, while 28.9 percent of patients 55-64, 31.2 percent of patients 65-74, and 26.6 percent of patients 75-84 did so. The study was based on 269,445 hospital admissions for COVID-19 and 969,462 admissions for heart failure across 832 hospitals and 13,421 clinics in all 50 states.
