Jay Carter Named Chair of Coalition for Healthcare Communication Executive Committee

Jan. 13, 2020 — Jay Carter, R.Ph., has been elected Chair of the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Healthcare Communication for 2020-2021. He succeeds Karsten Risch, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., who served in 2018-2019.

“We are in an election year where our industry will be continuously scrutinized and criticized,” said Carter. “Business as usual. I’m grateful that the CHC is successful at its mission of representing our industry well, and it’s my intent to ensure that it continues to benefit our membership… I also hope to increase our numbers, as coalitions only work when they have a broad and active base.”

Carter is Executive Vice President of AbelsonTaylor, where he has worked in leadership positions for 32 years. He has been a member of the Coalition’s Executive Committee since 2015. Carter has won numerous industry honors, is a board member and former chair of the Medical Advertising Hall of Fame and was recognized by the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Laura Schoen, President/Global Healthcare at Weber Shandwick, has been named Vice Chair of the Coalition.  Donna Murphy, Global CEO of Havas Health & You, will continue as Treasurer, and J.D. Cassidy, President of Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide, will continue as Secretary.  Jon Bigelow serves as Executive Director.

The Coalition, founded in 1991, is a nonpartisan group devoted to ensuring the high quality and continued availability of accurate health information to improve patient care. Coalition member companies cover a range of disciplines involved in communicating about health, including advertising, marketing, scientific communications, journal publishers, health websites, and point of care education.

“The Coalition serves its members by monitoring key regulatory and legislative proposals and industry trends, keeping members informed about important developments and their implications, and representing the healthcare communications industry in clarifying the impact of these proposals,” said Bigelow. “Our members believe that responsible communications on innovative developments in medicine assure that healthcare providers and their patients will have the information necessary to use diagnostic tools, medicines, and devices appropriately, effectively and safely,” he noted.
