Liguori Academy and CMI/Compas Partner to Build Library for Students

PHILADELPHIA – November 18, 2020 – Liguori Academy, a nonprofit private high school committed to serving the community, has launched a campaign to build a library for its students, with the support of longtime partner CMI/Compas, strategic media agency and part of WPP (NYSE:WPP). The organizations are welcoming donations to support the library’s growth.

“The fundamental goal of school is to teach in a way that enables students to achieve their greatest potential,” said Liguori Academy President and Founder Michael Marrone. “As educators we know that education cannot have a one-size-fits-all approach. Liguori Academy is an outstanding example of a brand-new approach to the age-old problem of the square peg and the round hole. By addressing each student holistically and understanding their needs, we can properly support and promote academic achievement, so their future is bright and boundless.”

Access to libraries has been proven to benefit students’ learning, but unfortunately funding has been cut from most schools’ budgets in the School District of Philadelphia. Liguori Academy offers a safe space for their students, so the resource of a library within their walls will be a priceless resource.  The Liguori Library will be built as a place where every Liguori Academy student can go to experience the learning, adventure and escape that books bring.

Liguori Academy teachers created a wish list of books that reflect the diversity of students at the school. While the books span a variety of genres, all of them have one thing in a common: they act as a mirror with which students can see themselves. At their root, books allow students to leave their poverty-impacted neighborhoods and – for once – see themselves in a narrative with greater possibilities.

Donations can be made in two ways: by donating funds to be used to purchase books at this link, or by purchasing the books directly through A Novel Idea, a Philadelphia-based independent bookstore, by calling 267-764-1202 or emailing at [email protected].

Liguori Academy and CMI/Compas are also asking authors of young adult books to contribute to the school’s inspiration wall by sending a message of hope and encouragement, which will be framed and added to the library wall for all to see. Contributions should be on a 4×6 unlined paper, and can be sent to Liguori Academy, ATTN: Inspiration Wall, 2343 E. Tucker Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.

In addition to promoting this fundraiser, CMI/Compas will be making this initiative central to their annual employee CMI/Compas Wish holiday drive, where for 25 consecutive years employees have donated funds and time to help nonprofit causes. They will also be donating funds for books in honor of clients and partners.

CMI/Compas has offered support to Liguori Academy for several years, including fundraising and mentoring. The two were honored during the 2018 Faces of Philanthropy Awards, given by The Philadelphia Business Journal to recognize philanthropic partnerships.
