Med Ad News Announces Finalists for the 2019 Manny Awards and Names Calcium’s Steven Michaelson & Judy Capano as Industry Persons of the Year

 

LIVINGSTON, NJ – (March 25, 2019) – Med Ad News, the leading pharmaceutical business and marketing publication, announces the nominees for the 30th Annual Manny Awards – celebrating the best in pharmaceutical and healthcare advertising – and announces Steven Michaelson and Judy Capano as the Industry Persons of the Year. The Manny Awards annual gala event celebrates creative excellence in healthcare advertising and communications. More than 600 industry peers are expected to join Med Ad News in honoring winners across 30 total award categories, including the year’s Most Creative Agency, Most Admired Agency, Agency of the Year I, II and III, and more. The Manny Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.

The Med Ad News “MedAdvocate” jury convened on March 20 for a roundtable discussion of finalist campaigns previously determined via online voting, and included selections from more than 200 eligible voters across healthcare communication agencies. In order to take a deeper dive into the finalist campaigns, a panel of experts dubbed “MedAdvocates” were each assigned specific campaigns and tasked to initiate meaningful dialog amongst the jurors. MedAdvocates were selected based on their creative expertise and widely recognized performance within the industry. Ultimately, the team scored each finalist campaign using a point system that, combined with the popular vote conducted online, arrived at the eventual winners to be crowned on April 18, 2019.

Med Ad News is excited to recognize as its 2019 Industry Persons of the Year, Steven Michaelson, Founder/CEO of Calcium & Judy Capano, Co-Founder/Managing Partner/COO of Calcium.

Steven Michaelson has spent nearly 35 years in the advertising industry, 25 of them in pharmaceuticals. He was Founder/CEO of Wishbone, a highly successful start-up that thrived for 13 strong years and was awarded Agency of the Year – Category III by Med Ad News in 2009. Wishbone was acquired in January 2010 by Rosetta (and then Publicis). Continuing in that tradition, Steven founded Calcium NYC during 2012, calling upon the original Wishbone leadership team to help guide and run the agency. In 2014, Calcium NYC was combined with Vox Medica and Star Life Sciences to create Calcium, an agency that offers clients Wishbone-like strategic and creative firepower along with robust medical and scientific expertise and leading-edge digital capabilities. Calcium was recognized as Agency of the Year – Category III by Med Ad News during 2018.

Earlier in his career, Steven held creative leadership positions at KPR, FCB, Harrison and Star, and Robert A. Becker. Over the years, he has helped create campaigns for high-profile brands including Zocor, Glucophage, Plavix, EpiPen, OxyContin, Depakote, and Diovan. Steven is a graduate of Pratt Institute. He is Chairperson of the Medical Advertising Hall of Fame.

Judy Capano brings more than 25 years of experience on both the pharma client side and agency side to her position as the strategy lead for Calcium. Judy started her career in Sales, Hospital Sales, Training, and Sales Management for Marion Merrell Dow. Moving to the agency side, Judy became EVP, Director of Client Services at Harrison Star and COO/Strategy Officer for McCann Torre Lazur Worldwide, where she ran the global agency network and was responsible for M&A/start-ups. More recently, Judy was Partner/Chief Strategy Officer at Wishbone. She is a cum laude graduate of Siena College, for which she sits on the board of trustees. Judy is married to Steven Michaelson, and they live in New York City with three children.
