Yesterday the agency announced the approval of Zevtera for treating Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections, acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia.

An antibiotic already in use in Europe to treat pneumonia controlled deadly bloodstream infections with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria just as effectively as the most powerful antibiotic currently in use, according to data from a late-stage trial.

Antibiotics maker Melinta Therapeutics, which has commercialization rights for the drug in the U.S. market, plans to make rezafungin available this summer.

Shares of Spero Therapeutics soared in premarket trading following GlaxoSmithKline’s announcement that it will license the company’s late-stage antibiotic asset, tebipenem HBr, a potential treatment for complicated urinary tract infections.
