A steady recovery in surgical procedures that were deferred during the pandemic, especially by older adults, as well as easing staffing shortages at hospitals have increased demand for medical devices.

Medical device maker Boston Scientific said on Tuesday it would buy private medical tech company Relievant Medsystems for an upfront cash payment of $850 million, in a bid to expand treatment options for chronic low back pain.

The acquisition, which is expected to close in the first half of 2023, according to a joint statement on Sunday, comes amid a slowdown in merger and acquisitions activity in the U.S. life sciences sector.

The deal, valued at $615 million, will expand Boston Scientific’s portfolio of gastric devices.
