BMS said its experimental drug to treat Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, did not help patients achieve disease remission in a late-stage study.

The agency’s decision will help Lilly enter a sector, where drugs from rivals such as Abbvie, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson are already jostling for a share of the multi-billion dollar market.

The drug is among Lilly’s potential growth drivers for this decade alongside tirzepatide for obesity, lebrikizumab for atopic dermatitis or eczema and pirtobrutinib for cancer.

As part of the deal, Ironwood will acquire VectivBio’s experimental therapy apraglutide, which Ironwood says could reach $1 billion in peak net sales.
