China’s vaccine developers stuck with unused mRNA COVID shots and idle manufacturing plants are pursuing new targets for the novel messenger RNA technology, but they face a tough path, crimped by a lack of revenue.

A combination of Merck’s blockbuster cancer drug Keytruda and an mRNA vaccine from Moderna has demonstrated positive results at the three-year stage in a Phase IIb study of patients with resected high-risk melanoma following complete resection.

Pfizer on Tuesday reported its first quarterly loss since 2019, as demand fell for its COVID products and it recorded a hefty charge mainly from the U.S. government returning millions of doses of its antiviral treatment Paxlovid.

AstraZeneca is China’s largest drugmaker and is doubling down on the world’s No.2 pharmaceutical market amid slumping sales of its COVID vaccine.

Global recruitment for the trial has begun, with the first patients being enrolled in Australia, the companies said, adding that the study would take place in more than 25 countries around the world.
