Moderna has entered into a development and commercialization funding agreement with asset management firm Blackstone Life Sciences to help advance its pipeline of flu vaccine candidates.

Messenger RNA (mRNA)-based therapeutics have seen a boom in popularity in recent years, a space that has become increasingly competitive as pharma giants entered to produce COVID-19 vaccines and therapies that target a wider range of diseases.  

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to global health and was associated with 4.95 million deaths in 2019 globally, more than HIV and malaria combined, as of the WHO’s last readout. Vaccines can be effective tools in combating AMR and have been highlighted by WHO.

Sinopharm, now the China distributor of Merck & Co’s COVID-19 antiviral treatment molnupiravir, said its biotech unit received clinical trial approval from the National Medical Products Administration.

This effort is the first result of the research collaboration established in 2018 between the University of Pennsylvania and BioNTech aimed at developing novel mRNA vaccine candidates for the prevention and treatment of various infectious diseases.
