Public health insurance plans, which cover about 90% of Germans, will not foot the bill, under a decades old law that bars them from covering weight-loss drugs.

The results are based, on average, across two late-stage studies after intensive lifestyle changes or with continued treatment, before patients stopped taking the drug.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said AstraZeneca’s GLP-1 drug for type 2 diabetes, called exenatide and marketed as Bydureon, was also included in the review.
